The ATH-W5000s are a super high-end option from Audio-Technica. The ear cups are made from striped ebony wood and the ear cups are lambskin. Looking at these headphones, it's easy to tell they're for people that are serious about audio.
Interestingly enough, the ATH-W5000s didn't perform particularly well on our audio tests.
The ATH-ANC7s are a pair of active noise cancelling over-ears from Audio-Technica. The ATH-ANC7s have the ability to turn their active noise cancellation feature on and off, which immediately puts them leagues beyond many other active-cancellers. The headphones can also play back music once their batteries have died, or without a battery at all.
The ATH-ESW9s are a sophisticated pair of headphones with a price meant for the upper class. They retail for approximately $450, which is a lot, even for high-end headphones. Fear not, our blue-blooded reader, the headphones aren't simply an attractive piece of furniture: they have good overall audio quality as well.
The Audio-Technica ATH-A700 headphones are on-ears intended for use with your home sound system. The cable is long and covered with a woven-cloth casing, so it should be safe stretched across your room. There's also a 1/4-inch adapter included to accommodate all stereo systems.
Like fellow homebodies, the Pioneer SE0A100s and the Sennheiser HD 555s, the Audio-Technica ATH-A700 headphones shouldnt' leave the house. They have very poor isolation and leakage control and they're not even particularly portable to begin with. Assuming you keep them inside, they'll offer some low-distortion playback for $300.
The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC3 headphones prove that combining two good things often isn't the best idea. By pairing the in-ear design with active cancellation, the headphones actually perform worse than either a typical active-canceller or in-ear headphone. Despite this and some other audio performance issues, we think the ATH-ANC3s might be good for drum fans, or people that like a deep, slightly tubby bass.
The ATH-ANC3 headphones currrently retail for $170.
