You know, we swear there was a time after all the "TEEN ON CELL PHONE DESTROYS TOWNSHIP" news pieces that the media kind of shook its head, realized it was being a bit melodramatic, and decided to not be so fearful and incendiary when it came to new technological fads. Apparently we were wrong, because the same thing is happening now with headphones.
The latest headphone victim: a 20 year old skateboarder in San Diego. It was 5pm. Our protagonist was breaking off some really cool tricks while he listened to "Click Click Boom," and envisioned his happy, lucrative life as someone who's just as good as Tony Hawk, but not such a total sell-out. Little did our hero know, but his headphones and their infectious alternative music had subliminally lured him right into the waiting maniacal clutches of San Diego's most feared villain: the trolley.
The trolley was traveling slowly at the time, so while the kid got scuffed up and suffered some serious head trauma, he should be ok. All we can do is shake our fists at the heavens and cry out for vengeance.
We guess it's just headphones' time to be the subject of all the, "popular gadget kills" stories, thanks to those blasted, blame-dodging iPods. As silly and condescending as we think such reports are, we do admit stories with villains are far more entertaining than "average, everyday human carelessness leads to accident." |
