AKG has released four new high-definition headphones: the K 142 HD, K 242 HD, K 172 HD, and K 272 HD. All four feature AKG’s Varimotion diaphragm technology, which enables the diaphragm perimeter to vibrate elastically while the center pumps like a piston. AKG says all this jumpin' and jivin' offers better sound. While we haven't tested this yet, we do admit Varimotion certainly looks like it's offering better sound.

Varimotion's sultry dance moves aren't all these headphones have in common. For one, they look virtually identical. The only way they differ is in terms of their backs and wear type. The K 142 HD is the on-ear, semi-open headphone. It seems to be marketed towards musicians, so if you don't know an instrument you can't buy these. The K 242 HD is the same thing, but with an over-ear design. The K 172 HD headphone is on-ear, and was designed for monitoring audio sources in noisy conditions (read: closed-back); the K 272 HD is its over-ear counterpart.
