January 07, 2009A quick look at the Sennheiser HD 800s and MX W1s
We stopped by the Sennheiser booth tonight at Digital Experience and got to see the HD800s and MX W1s in person. We couldn't listen to either, but maybe – if you guys eat all your vegetables – we could stop by their booth tomorrow to give you our worthless, subjective opinion on how they sound. We did, however, scrounge up some information on each with some on-site photography (read: bad photography).
The HD 800s are super-duper high end and exist solely to mug audiophiles. They'll be available next month for a nickle under $1,400. That's right, audiophiles, time to get that second mortgage on your studio apartment.

This is what the HD 800s would look like if you were the last boss from the
original Virtua Fighter games.

This angle shows how gigantic the ear cups are.

Here's the bottom of the headphones. The cord looks like it can detatch,
but we're like 80% sure it doesn't.

Here's a view of the cup padding, complete with texture.

This is one serious plug.
In case you're unaware of what the MX W1s are, they're a set of non-Bluetooth, wireless in-ears. The MX W1s are fairly old news since they debuted at last year's Digital Experience. Interestingly enough, though, they're still not out yet. Don't fret though! We talked to our PR rep at the show and we were put on a very short, absurdly exclusive list to get them after CES is over.

The MX W1s in their case.

The MX W1s outside the case. The left ear piece shows the side that faces your ear,
while the right ear piece faces outward, towards the public.
Hopefully we do end up getting them after CES, because we know a lot of readers are interested in them. Plus, it would make an awesome e-brag/interflex: 'Oh yeah, the MX W1s? We reviewed those a while ago because we were one of the top three most awesome sites in the headphones section of the internet.' In any case, look for our near-exclusive review which will be up next week or the week after if everything goes to plan.

The Sennheiser CX 680i in-ear headphones are a decent set of lower-mid-range headphones with a remote & mic.
